Mexico Follows the Bahamas and Other Caribbean Rivals as Cruise Capacity Surges and Winter Holiday Costs Face Fresh Scrutiny
Caribbean cruise capacity rises as Mexico and the Bahamas compete for winter travellers, spending and lower fares in 2026–27. The Caribbean cruise capacity expansion is increasing competition for winter holidaymakers as cruise lines add ships, ports accommodate more calls, and fares come under pressure. A 10% year-on-year increase in fourth-quarter capacity is raising questions about pricing and demand. Mexico recorded 8.2 million cruise passengers between January and August 2026, generating US$716.4 million in reported economic activity. Meanwhile, Nassau Cruise Port welcomed approximately 6.1 million passengers in 2025, reinforcing the Bahamas' position in the regional market. The challenge is to fill additional berths without sacrificing too much revenue per passenger. Pricing decisions depend on booking pace, operating costs, itinerary appeal and demand for particular departure dates.
