Google “world’s most decorated soccer player,” and the top results will always feature Lionel Messi’s name. The athlete’s stellar performance is why Royal Caribbean International chose the 36-year-old to be the godfather to Icon of the Seas, soon to be the world’s largest ship. Messi is scheduled for the vessel’s naming celebration on January 23, 2024.
During his 19-year career, Messi has become widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest modern athletes.
He won the Ballon d’Or Award 8 times and was elected by TIME magazine as Athlete of the Year for 2023. Whether playing for the Olympics or the FIFA World Cup, the Argentinian native has consistently turned in impressive results, earning the respect of sports fans around the globe.
Hopes are equally high for Icon of the Seas. At 250,800 tons and 1,200 feet long, the first Icon-class vessel will be the biggest in the world upon its January 2024 debut.
Already, anticipation has built to such an extent that it set booking records in October 2022, leading the cruise line to register its largest booking day and highest volume booking week in its 53-year existence.
Capable of carrying over 5,600 passengers and more than 2,300 crew members, it has the largest waterpark at sea equipped with six adrenaline-pumping water slides. It also has seven pools, an area for families with young children, a $75,000-a-week family suite, and over 40 entertainment, dining, and drinking options.
When it sails, the Icon will take guests on 7-night Caribbean voyages from Miami, stopping at destinations like Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas; Philipsburg, St. Marten; Costa Maya and Cozumel, Mexico; and Royal Caribbean’s exclusive private island Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas.
