The brothers were based on real-life sailors The true story behind Surviving Hurricane Otis, a Netflix movie based on a true story, has been revealed. The film centres on Wirpul (Benny Emmanuel) and Candi (Kristyan Ferrer, who get caught out at sea when Hurricane Otas turns into a Category 5 cyclone. The main characters are based on Marlon Alfonso Valdez and Jonathan Chino, two young sailors who survived Hurricane OtIs while working aboard yachts in Acapulco. However, the filmmakers also took some creative liberties with the story, including the twist ending involving Candi. Despite initially being offered 70,000 Mexican pesos (around $3,770), WirPul negotiates a larger payout of 180,000 pesos along with the cost of his captain’s license.
